Today I wanted to talk about the next chapter I have been reading in Napoleon Hill’s book Think And Grow Rich. This chapter is on auto-suggestion which is a technique of self-suggestion or a sort of self-hypnosis. He says that auto-suggestion is about the communication between the conscious mind and the sub-conscious mind.
Humans as opposed to animals have control over what we think about, over our conscious thoughts. Dogs for example do not have the this. They simply act in accordance with their environment but can never question why.
The Garden of the Sub-Conscious
And Hill compares the sub-conscious mind to garden. In a garden that is not well-maintained, weeds will grow. By that I understand that if you do not put anything consciously into your sub-conscious, if you do not impress any positive thoughts, then negative thoughts or simply any thoughts will grow. Those thoughts will then eventually manifest in physical form in your life. So, what he is saying is that you should put something in there and do not expect something positive to grow by itself.
Another really important point he makes is that it is not just enough simply to input something by consciously thinking it but that you will have to get emotionally involved in that thought or in that desire you have. Because only then can the sub-conscious mind accept it.
For example for children, they do not have any conscious ability to reject or affirm something that goes into their sub-conscious so anything will go into it since anything is connected to emotions. As adults, thus, we have to consciously connect emotions to thoughts so that they will be implanted in the sub-conscious mind.
Persistence Is Key
This is also where Napoleon Hill once again talks about the importance of persistence. Something that is persistently impressed on the sub-conscious will eventually manifest and will be implemented in the sub-conscious mind as a habit or a conditioning. Hill also mentions in previous chapters that you must give something in return for what you hope to achieve or in other words: the price must be paid. Thus, the price for implanting a positive desire in the sub-conscious mind would be the persistent effort of trying to do so.
Here are 3 recommended steps of action to implant any idea sub-consciously:
First of all, it help if you close your eyes to more easily visualize your desire and “trick” your sub-conscious mind into believing that you already possess what you hope to obtain.
- Find a quiet spot, ideally in bed and repeat your written statement aloud.
- Do this twice a day; ideally in the morning after waking up and at night before going to sleep.
- Write down and carry with you a visual statement of your goal and read it as often as possible throughout the day.
I do think it is quite natural to be skeptical about this – and it’s good to be skeptical about things in general – Hill addresses this in his book as well and states that by repeating these steps over and over and re-reading the material your skepticism will transform into belief eventually and manifest in the physical world!
